Running Appendix #2
Walking Barefoot

You know how to walk, right? You don’t need anyone to tell you the ‘proper’ way to walk. It comes naturally, right?
Well just trying walking barefoot for a few minutes on any terrain and you’ll soon discover that the way you walk doesn’t really work without shoes. In fact for you to walk any distance without shoes you’re going to need to re-discover walking from scratch.

I’d been running barefoot and/or in minimalist shoes for six years before I turned my attention to barefoot walking. I thought walking was just walking, but just as with running: the gait learned wearing shoes is different from the natural one I would have learned had I grown up without shoes. The thing that kept me wondering about this was the fact that my feet never seemed to get used to walking in minimalist shoes. It was my heels that always suffered. Surely this would get easier, I kept telling myself. But although things improved, they never improved past a certain point. Something had to be missing.
